Which Elder Futhark Rune Represents You? A Personal Guide to Finding Your Rune
Have you ever felt a pull toward a specific Elder Futhark rune?
Maybe you keep seeing it in your readings, or something about its shape just feels right.
That’s not a coincidence.
In the Norse tradition, runes aren’t just letters.
They’re living energies, each one carrying a force of nature, a lesson, and a piece of the cosmic story.
I’ve been working with runes for years, both in my spiritual practice and in my jewelry making.
And the question I get asked more than almost anything else is: “Which rune represents me?”
So let’s figure that out together.
How to Find Your Personal Rune
There’s no single “correct” method for finding your rune.
The Norse people didn’t have a zodiac system that assigned runes at birth (despite what some websites claim).
Instead, your personal rune is something you discover through reflection and intuition.
Here are three approaches that work well.
Method 1: The Birth Date Approach
While this isn’t a traditional Norse practice, many modern rune practitioners connect the 24 Elder Futhark runes to the cycle of the year.
The idea is simple: divide the calendar year into 24 roughly equal periods, and each period corresponds to a rune.
Here’s how it works:
- June 29 to July 13: Fehu (ᚠ)
- July 14 to July 28: Uruz (ᚢ)
- July 29 to August 12: Thurisaz (ᚦ)
- August 13 to August 28: Ansuz (ᚨ)
- August 29 to September 12: Raidho (ᚱ)
- September 13 to September 27: Kenaz (ᚲ)
- September 28 to October 12: Gebo (ᚷ)
- October 13 to October 27: Wunjo (ᚹ)
- October 28 to November 12: Hagalaz (ᚺ)
- November 13 to November 27: Nauthiz (ᚾ)
- November 28 to December 12: Isa (ᛁ)
- December 13 to December 27: Jera (ᛃ)
- December 28 to January 12: Eihwaz (ᛇ)
- January 13 to January 27: Perthro (ᛈ)
- January 28 to February 11: Algiz (ᛉ)
- February 12 to February 26: Sowilo (ᛊ)
- February 27 to March 13: Tiwaz (ᛏ)
- March 14 to March 29: Berkano (ᛒ)
- March 30 to April 13: Ehwaz (ᛖ)
- April 14 to April 28: Mannaz (ᛗ)
- April 29 to May 13: Laguz (ᛚ)
- May 14 to May 28: Ingwaz (ᛜ)
- May 29 to June 13: Dagaz (ᛞ)
- June 14 to June 28: Othala (ᛟ)
Look up your birthday and see if that rune resonates.
For many people, it clicks immediately.
For others, it’s a starting point that leads them somewhere deeper.
Method 2: Intuitive Selection
This is my personal favorite and the one I use most often.
Scroll through the rune descriptions below (or lay out a set of rune stones if you have them).
Pay attention to which rune catches your eye, which description makes your heart beat a little faster, or which one you keep coming back to.
Your body knows. Trust it.
Method 3: The Name Rune
In the Norse tradition, the first letter of your name carries significance.
Find the rune that corresponds to the first letter (or the closest sound) of your name.
This was a common practice in the Viking Age, where people would use their name rune as a personal mark on their belongings and correspondence.
The 24 Elder Futhark Runes: Find Yours
The Elder Futhark is divided into three groups of eight called Aettir (families).
Each Aett carries a different flavor of energy.
Freya’s Aett: Creation & Foundation
These runes deal with the material world, resources, and establishing yourself.
ᚠ Fehu (F): You are a builder.
Wealth, abundance, and creative energy flow through everything you do.
You’re the person who sees potential where others see nothing, and you have a gift for turning ideas into reality.
Your challenge: learning that true wealth isn’t always material.
ᚢ Uruz (U): You are raw strength.
Like the wild aurochs this rune represents, you have an untamed power that can’t be domesticated.
You thrive on challenge and become stronger under pressure.
Your challenge: channeling that wild energy with purpose instead of just force.
ᚦ Thurisaz (Th): You are a protector.
There’s a thorn-like quality to your personality: gentle with those you love, sharp with those who threaten them.
You have strong instincts and aren’t afraid of conflict when it matters.
Your challenge: knowing when to fight and when to let things pass.
ᚨ Ansuz (A): You are a communicator.
Words come naturally to you, whether spoken, written, or through creative expression.
You’re drawn to wisdom and have a deep need to understand the “why” behind everything.
Your challenge: listening as deeply as you speak.
ᚱ Raidho (R): You are a traveler.
Not just physically, but spiritually and intellectually.
You need movement, growth, and new horizons.
Staying in one place too long makes you restless.
Your challenge: finding the journey within the stillness.
ᚲ Kenaz (K/C): You are a torch in the darkness.
Creative fire burns in you, lighting the way for others.
You have natural artistic gifts and a warmth that draws people to you.
Your challenge: not burning yourself out by giving all your light to everyone else.
ᚷ Gebo (G): You are a gift-giver.
Your deepest joy comes from connection, partnership, and the sacred exchange between people.
You understand that the best relationships are balanced, and you have a talent for creating harmony.
Your challenge: accepting gifts as gracefully as you give them.
ᚹ Wunjo (W/V): You are joy itself.
You have a rare ability to find happiness and help others find it too.
You’re the person who makes a group feel complete.
Your challenge: sitting with sadness when it comes, instead of rushing to fix it.
Heimdall’s Aett: Transformation & Testing
These runes deal with challenges, change, and the forces that shape us.
ᚺ Hagalaz (H): You are a storm.
Disruption and transformation follow you, but not in a destructive way.
You’re the person who shakes things up so something better can grow.
You’ve probably been through more than most people know.
Your challenge: trusting that the destruction always leads to rebuilding.
ᚾ Nauthiz (N): You are resilient.
Need and necessity have been your greatest teachers.
You know how to make something from nothing, and you understand the power of constraint.
Your challenge: recognizing the difference between necessary struggle and suffering you don’t have to carry.
ᛁ Isa (I): You are stillness.
In a world that never stops moving, you have a rare ability to pause, observe, and wait.
You’re contemplative, patient, and deeply internal.
Your challenge: knowing when stillness becomes stagnation.
ᛃ Jera (J/Y): You are the harvest.
You understand that good things take time, and you’re willing to put in the work season after season.
You have natural patience and a deep trust in cycles.
Your challenge: accepting that some harvests fail, and planting again anyway.
ᛇ Eihwaz (E/Ei): You are the bridge between worlds.
There’s something about you that connects the physical and the spiritual.
You’re drawn to the liminal, the in-between, the mysteries.
Your challenge: staying grounded while you walk between worlds.
ᛈ Perthro (P): You are a mystery, even to yourself sometimes.
Fate, chance, and hidden things fascinate you.
You have strong intuition and a sense that there’s always more beneath the surface.
Your challenge: accepting that some mysteries aren’t meant to be solved.
ᛉ Algiz (Z): You are a guardian.
Protection is your instinct and your calling.
You’re the person others feel safe around, the one who holds the line.
You have strong boundaries and an awareness of danger that borders on psychic.
Your challenge: protecting yourself as fiercely as you protect others.
ᛊ Sowilo (S): You are sunlight.
Confidence, victory, and life force radiate from you.
You have a natural ability to inspire and lead, and people are drawn to your energy.
Your challenge: shining your light without needing external validation.
Tyr’s Aett: Fulfillment & Legacy
These runes deal with our place in the community, our legacy, and our spiritual growth.
ᛏ Tiwaz (T): You are a warrior of justice.
Honor, sacrifice, and doing the right thing drive you, even when it costs you.
You have strong moral convictions and a courage that runs deep.
Your challenge: accepting that justice isn’t always swift, and staying the course anyway.
ᛒ Berkano (B): You are a nurturer.
Growth, renewal, and gentle strength define you.
You have a gift for helping things (and people) blossom.
There’s a birch-tree quality to you: graceful, resilient, and deeply rooted.
Your challenge: nurturing yourself with the same tenderness you give to others.
ᛖ Ehwaz (E): You are a partner.
Trust, loyalty, and the bond between horse and rider capture your essence.
You work best when you have a trusted companion or collaborator, and you bring out the best in others through your steady presence.
Your challenge: maintaining your own identity within partnership.
ᛗ Mannaz (M): You are humanity at its best.
Community, self-awareness, and the interconnection of all people matter deeply to you.
You’re introspective without being self-absorbed, and you naturally understand what it means to be human.
Your challenge: accepting your own humanity, imperfections and all.
ᛚ Laguz (L): You are water.
Intuition, emotion, and the subconscious flow through you like a deep river.
You’re drawn to dreams, healing, and the unseen currents beneath the surface of life.
Your challenge: not drowning in other people’s emotions.
ᛜ Ingwaz (Ng): You are potential.
Like a seed waiting to sprout, you carry enormous unrealized energy.
You’re in a phase of internal growth, gathering strength for what’s coming next.
Your challenge: trusting the quiet growing season and not forcing the bloom.
ᛞ Dagaz (D): You are the dawn.
Breakthrough, awakening, and transformation are your constant companions.
You’ve experienced at least one profound shift in your life that changed everything.
Your challenge: embracing the light without fearing the next darkness.
ᛟ Othala (O): You are your ancestry.
Heritage, home, and the wisdom of those who came before you are central to who you are.
You feel a strong connection to your roots and have a deep sense of belonging.
Your challenge: honoring tradition while still forging your own path.
What to Do Once You’ve Found Your Rune
Finding your personal rune is just the beginning.
Here are a few ways to deepen that connection:
- Meditate with it. Sit quietly with the rune symbol in front of you (drawn on paper, carved in wood, or just held in your mind). Let its energy speak to you without trying to intellectualize it.
- Journal about it. Write down how the rune’s themes show up in your daily life. You’ll start seeing patterns you never noticed.
- Wear it. This is the most powerful way to keep your rune’s energy close. When you wear your personal rune, it becomes part of your daily intention and a quiet reminder of who you are at your core.
- Study its Aett. The runes on either side of yours in the Elder Futhark sequence are your “neighbors” and often reveal complementary lessons.

A Living Relationship
Your personal rune may change over time, and that’s perfectly natural.
The rune that speaks to you at 25 might not be the same one calling to you at 45.
As you grow and transform, different rune energies will become more relevant.
Think of it less like a fixed zodiac sign and more like a conversation that evolves as you do.
What matters most is that the rune you choose (or the one that chooses you) feels true.
Not impressive, not dramatic.
True.
Which rune spoke to you?
I’d love to hear about it.
