Origins...
Mysterious is the past, and many of our sources are as well. We learn in the Huld Manuscript of Galdrastafir (Hulda = secrecy) about many sigils, charms and symbols of magical and spiritual value.
Many of the original pagan meanings are distorted, as we can see via the Huld Manuscript of Galdrarstafir, the word “Galdur” meaning “magic”, a script of magical staves written in 1860 by Geir Vigfússon.
The Vegvísir, in English “wayfinder”, or High German “Wegweiser”, is such a symbol. As we know today, being a Viking meant “to go abroad”, for trade, expansion and so forth. Being a Viking was an occupation and a status.
The very word Viking has a nautical meaning, as Proto-Nordic root ‘wikan’ means ‘to turn. The Vegvísir is a spiritual compass and relates to the medieval Norse Explorers who went abroad.
The Huld Manuscript tells us “Beri maður stafi þessa á sér villist maður ekki í hríðum né vondu veðri þó ókunnugur sá or in other words “Carry this sign with you and you won’t get lost in storms or bad weather, even though in unfamiliar surroundings”
