Origins...
The Germanic Thunder-God Donar, the Norse Thor, the Celtic Taranis and the Slavic Perun are the very same deity.
That is due to the Proto-Indo-European origins of the Myths and languages and scholarly research via the comparative method. Indeed, his roots are ancient, and so is his Myth.
Nature and natural powers were percieved as divine, animated, containing soul, intelligence and consciousness.
These animistic remants of what we call today “Paganism”, which is a term coined by the Roman Empire, are both important and mysterious.
When we speak of Germanic and Celtic today, it’s important to understand them as language groups.
The term “Thor” derives from Proto-Germanic Þunraz, meaning “thunder”.
The Mjölnir , prounced miol-neer is the Hammer of Thor, feared as a gruesome and powerful weapon.
Yet Thor himself, as the Son of Odin, is also heavily associated with Agriculture and growing crops as well as protecting Asgard, home of the Gods.
We learn from the Prose Edda, in the Skáldskaparmál that the Hammer was created out of a bet between Loki, Sindr and Brokkr. The two dwarves created a few other magical objects for the Gods.
Many amulets depicting a hammer have been found throughout northern Europe, but it wasn’t until the find of Købelev in Lolland, Denmark that provided a runic text that said “Hmar x is”, which translates into “this is a hammer”. It was cast in bronze and is said to be 1,100-year-old.
