Tiwaz Rune Meaning
Tiwaz Rune Meaning
Tiwaz
The seventeenth rune of the Elder Futhark, connected with Tyr, justice, law, bravery, protection, warfare, and the courage to act with honor.
What does Tiwaz mean?
The Tiwaz rune derives from Proto-Germanic Tîwaz, Proto-Norse tīwaʀ, and quite possibly Proto-Indo-European deiwós, meaning celestial being and “to shine.”
Tiwaz is tied to the god Tyr, a god of justice, law, bravery, warfare, and protection. Tyr may have been older than Odin and more important to the Germanic people before the migration period.
This rune carries the feeling of the sky, the oath, the sword, and the difficult choice that must be made because it is right, not because it is easy.
Tiwaz, Tyr, and the ancient sky god
Tyr is widely known before the migration period and is of Indo-European origin, where he may have been known as dyēus, an ancient sky deity.
The Lindholm Amulet from the 2nd to 4th century dates back to the late Roman Iron Age. It was found in southern Sweden and may be an invocation to the god Tyr.
There are different variants of Tyr, including Zies and Cyo. According to a brief notation to the Old High German Wessobrunn Prayer, the Alemannic people worshipped their god Cyo in Ciesburc, later known as Augusta Vindelicorum under the Roman Empire and now Augsburg.
Tiwaz as justice and brave sacrifice
Tiwaz is a protector of people, justice, and bravery. It is not reckless aggression. It is directed force held accountable to truth, law, and honor.
This rune can appear where courage and integrity are being tested. Sometimes the right path is costly, and Tiwaz asks whether you are willing to stand upright anyway.
When used as personal symbolism, Tiwaz can represent justice, bravery, leadership, protection, honor, oath-keeping, warrior discipline, and the strength to do what is right when it matters.
