thurisaz rune meaning

The Thurs (Thurisaz) Rune stems from the Proto Germanic Þurisaz and Proto Norse þursaʀ. Þurs means “giants”, we know that much from Icelandic and Norwegian poems, dating back to the 13th and 15th Century manuscripts and the 9th Century Abecedarium Nordmannicum.

Thurisaz might or might not be tied to “Thorns” as a both protective and defensive force and may be tied to the powers of the Giants in North Germanic Mythology, representing powers that are both creative and destructive in the cosmic order.

They are often polar to each other. The Giants are mysterious beings. The so called Jötnar are related to the Ymir whose body created the Universe, when Ymir was killed. It is Odin himself whose Ancestors are Giants.
