ORIGINS...
The word Rune stems from Proto-Germanic rūnō and means “secret, whisper”. Runes were used as letters for the Germanic people.
Most Rune names derive from Proto-Germanic and reconstructed Proto-Indo-European terms and represent a letter and often a mythological or cosmological principle, such as a natural force or being.
Not much is known about the spiritual or ritualistic value of the Runes. But to the scholar of the Germanic Pantheon it becomes clear, that letters and words were far from just “letters” as we see it today. They contained “megin”, a power and force. Many Runes were found on archaeological finds such as the Nordendorf fibulae from Nordendorf, Bavaria, Germany and indicate spiritual value and possibly spiritual properties used for amulets or charms.
As Proto-Germanic evolved, the meanings and the Runes themselves evolved as well, new ones were created.
