From Proto-Germanic berkaną, Old English beorc which became “Birch” or in High German “Birke” in reference to the Birch tree.

The Birch tree is often associated with the Goddess Freya and thus birth and fertility. The Birch with its white bark is a tree of light during the dark winters, like a shining lantern.

The Birch tree is connected to many tales and legends. As a Rune it might be related to Motherhood and giving birth to a new life.
