Algiz stems from Proto Germanic Elhaz, the Proto Norse elhaʀ and possibly ēolh for “moose”.

The swedish word “älg” and High German “Elch” means “moose” in English, both might have the same origin. Algiz stands for protection and power, the antlers of the moose are protective and can be used as a weapon.

Algiz might have been a symbol for life and protection. A moose is a strong and large animal, and is often associated with northern forests, long winters and the powers of the north.
