Sowilo stems from Proto Norse sōlu and possibly its PIE-root suwen.

Sowilo means “the Sun”, which later developed as Old Norse sól. Sowilo is known from the Kylver Stone dating back to 3rd to 5th century inscriptions found in Gotland, Sweden.

Sowilo might originate from the Old Italic letter “s”. From all three Rune poems we learn that the Sun is divine and necessary for life, both life giving and destructive to ice and cold.
